SENIOR PET WELLNESS
As dogs and cats get older, they need more attention and special care. Something as simple as regular veterinary exams can actually help your pet live longer!
Animals generally do not show signs of illness or serious disease until it has advanced. It is important to diagnose these diseases quickly when your pet is in their older years. There are many different diseases we can check for including:
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Hormone disorders
- Liver problems
Alongside health changes, owners will sometimes notice behavioral changes in their pet as they age. Some common behavior changes include:
- aggressive behavior
- easily disturbed
- new found anxiety/nervousness
- accidents in the house
- not responding to usual voice commands
- less interest in playing
At Beach Avenue Animal Hospital, we recommend bringing your pet into see us before they reach senior status so we can check their baseline. We recommend this check up around 7 years old in dogs, and 8 years old in cats.
We can treat many symptoms that are commonly attributed to age, and we can also improve your pet’s quality of life in many ways: by identifying and preventing or reducing pain, recommending a nutrition and exercise plan, and suggesting environmental modifications.
